The original organ at St. James was installed by the Moller Organ Co. of Hagerstown, Maryland in 1947. It contained 12 ranks of pipes located in chambers in the balconies on either side of the nave.

In 1997, Olson-Lethert Organs of Roseville, Minnesota began work in six phases to replace the blower and mechanical action, modernize the console and expand and complete the tonal resources.

Upon completion in the fall of 2008, seven ranks of pipes, the keyboards and several rebuilt chests from the original organ are incorporated into a new and expanded organ. With 3-manuals and pedal playing, on 72 draw knobs, the new organ has the complete tonal palate of a true American Classic organ and supports playing the range of organ repertoire from baroque to contemporary.

The instrument has complete principal choruses in the Great, Swell, Choir and Pedal divisions at 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1; five mixtures; five mutations at 2 2/3, 1 1/3 and 1 3/5; a variety of beautifully voiced flute and string stops at 32,16, 8, 4, 2, and 1; and six ranks of reeds at 32, 16, 8 and 4 including a solo division with both Fanfare and Imperial Trumpets enchamade; chimes and a six bell Zimbelstern.

The stunningly beautiful Imperial Trumpet is installed enchamade below the rose window on the east sanctuary wall. The Fanfare Trumpet is installed enchamade and under tonal expression in the swell chamber.

The organ façade is comprised of twelve highly polished organ pipes installed within the grill of the pipe chambers on either side of the nave. The façade adds visual interest and makes a statement that a pipe organ of significance is located within each chamber.
