Many German pioneers made their new homes on a farm. Bethany Lutheran Church (in Emmet Township near Renville) was founded in the late-19th century (1880s). Worship services were first held in the public school house. Later Bethany congregation of Emmet Township and St. John’s Evangelical German Lutheran of Renville formed a merged parish and were originally part of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota (ELSM). The Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Minnesota is now known as the Minnesota District of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
